As a neonatal nurse I have worked in some large Neonatal Units and a very sad part of my job was looking after babies who were so sick they they did not survive. A big part of this was ensuring the babies were comfortable and especially looking after the family throughout the whole process.
I have been very lucky to have worked with some incredible bereavement and palliative care specialists and I have learnt a lot from them. I also have a special place in my memories for the brave families and babies I have cared for in their last days and hours and I will never forget them.
One of the sad realities of neonatal bereavement care is that often these babies are born very early and have never been able to be dressed, so families often have no clothes to bury their precious babies in, and this can cause additional distress for families at the toughest of times.
Since we have launched, some neonatal units have bought our premature baby clothes for their bereavement pack to be available to families, but I wanted to find something more specific for this group of babies; some specialist baby bereavement clothing.
After a long time searching I was very pleased to find our new collection of baby bereavement gowns which are beautifully simple, with a small embroidered teddy bear. The wrap around design of these bereavement gowns allows for easy dressing and has a closed 'pouch' design rather than trousers. They are available in several sizes: up to 1lb, 1lb-3lbs and 3lb-5lbs sizes, but I hope to increase the range soon.
I will be writing a blog post shortly about neonatal bereavement resources to help signpost families to valuable support.
