Can a 6 pound baby wear preemie clothes?

When it comes to dressing a newborn baby, it can be difficult to determine what size of clothing is best for them. Preemie clothes are specifically designed for babies that are born prematurely or those that weigh less than 6 pounds. This begs the question - can a 6 pound baby wear preemie clothes?

To answer this question, it is important to understand the differences between preemie and newborn clothing and how they fit on babies of different sizes.

Preemie clothing isn't all created equally. Some brands will include specialist features for babies in hospital - like slits in the side for wires and tubes - which many 6lb babies won't require. Other 6lb clothing is just a smaller version of typical newborn baby clothing.

Some brands of premature baby clothes and newborn sized clothes will include measurements. Size 44 for example means it's suitable for a baby 44cm in length. This would be about average for a baby of 4lb-6lb, but of course they do vary.
