The textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world, with hazardous chemicals often used throughout the production process. Babies and children have particularly sensitive skin because of the dermis, the last layer of skin, is not yet entirely formed. So it's important that baby clothing comes from reliable sources and if this is particularly important to you then organic cotton baby clothes are recommended.
Anyone manufacturing baby clothing can claim to be ‘organic’ or ‘ethical’ and it is impossible for consumers to tell the difference between an organic or non-organic baby product just by looking at it or feeling it. So this is where a certification scheme helps.
What is GOTS?
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.
The aim of the standard is to define world-wide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer. Textile processors and manufacturers are enabled to export their organic fabrics and garments with one certification accepted in all major markets.
GOTS certified baby clothes
Only GOTS certification of the final organic product assures that all processes were respected. The simple reference to organic cotton baby clothes or ethical baby clothes doesn't guarantee that the manufacturing process is clean from hazardous chemicals, and took place in factories that treat their staff well.
GOTS-certified organic cotton baby clothing is produced in environmentally and socially responsible conditions, having a low impact on nature and human beings by reducing direct exposure to hazardous chemicals. The entire production chain is controlled, avoiding the use of fertilisers, pesticides and other chemical agents harmful to human health.
